Abstract

1389316 Welding by pressure; soldering ESSEX INTERNATIONAL Inc 12 Oct 1972 [18 Oct 1971] 47129/72 Heading B3R [Also in Division H2] A terminal end of a cable, for example a battery cable comprising twisted aluminium strands, is prepared by stripping insulation from the cable end, fusing the strands together, which may be done by a carbon arc device, and then tinning by vibrating the end at ultrasonic frequency in a bath of solder or Sn/Zn alloy. The vibrating frequency is greater than 20 kHz, and effects thermal and chemical action to abrade any oxide film from the conductor and permit a good tinning bond. As shown in Fig. 3, terminals 6, 8 may be provided by diecasting, sweating or shrinking, a metalurgical bond being thus formed between the conductor and the terminal.
