Abstract

1380459 Induction heater CARL CANZLER 9 Aug 1972 [13 Aug 1971] 37142/72 Heading H5H An induction heater comprises a multiturn aluminium strip winding 2, in which coolant passages 5 are provided between adjacent turns or groups of turns to which coolant, e.g. air is supplied. As shown, the heater is insulated by insulation 3 from the cylindrical wall 1 of the apparatus, e.g. chemical apparatus, to be heated. The winding 2 is also insulated from a cylindrical surrounding ferromagnetic steel jacket 4 by further insulation 3. As shown, the winding 2 has an insulating coating of aluminium oxide and is divided into three concentric groups of turns separated by air passages 5, insulating spacers 10 being provided between the groups of turns. Air is supplied to the winding 2 by apertures 9 in end rings mounting the winding between the insulating layers 3. In Fig. 3 (not shown) two groups of three turns are separated from one another by a layer of insulation. Each group of turns has a corrugated middle turn to define air passages between the middle turn and the inner and outer turns. In Fig. 4 (not shown) alternate turns are corrugated to provide the coolant passages.
