Abstract
1473864 Induction heating ELPHIAC SA 15 May 1974 [16 May 1973] 21617/74 Heading H5H A blank comprising a cylindrical portion 3 premachined at 9 from which a crank-pin 1 and associated webs 2 are to be forged is heated uniformly by a heating inductor comprising a main cylindrical winding 4 surrounding cylindrical portion 3 and a coaxial cylindrical auxiliary winding surrounding a web 2, the main winding 4 having a portion 6 adjacent the winding 5 which has a greater number of turns per unit length than a portion 7. Windings 4 and 5 are energized simultaneously in phase but auxiliary winding 5 is de-energized before winding 4 to ensure the desired uniform temperature distribution. Windings 4 and 5 may be embedded in heat insulation and may be mounted on a movable carriage or slide. Section 7 of winding 4 may be tapped to enable different length crankshafts to be heated.
