Abstract
949,484. Induction heating of rotating cylinders. ESCHER WYSS G.m.b.H. June 16, 1961 [June 25, 1960], No. 21857/61. Heading H5H. A rotatable, electrically-heated heating cylinder for paper webs or the like comprises at least one induction coil 6 mounted in the interior of the cylinder so as to be non-rotatable therewith, the coil being arranged to be fed with alternating current, so as to generate in the cylinder shell 1 an alternating magnetic flux which heats the cylinder shell by eddy currents. The induction coil preferably consists of a number of windings of an electrical conductor 7 running round close to the inner surface of the cylinder shell 1 inside iron yokes 8, which transmit the magnetic flux across air gaps 9 into the cylinder shell. The conductor of the induction coil may be hollow for the passage of a coolant and two or more coils may be axially arranged side by side with means for moving the coils in the axial direction to increase the uniformity of the heating.
