Abstract

1,153,962. Induction heating. AEG-ELOTHERM G.m.b.H. 12 Jan., 1968 [14 Nov., 1967], No. 1953/68. Heading H5H. Surface hardening of a flanged shaft 1 is carried out by rotating the shaft beneath two inductor loops disposed along the shaft surface, the main loop 6, 6<SP>1</SP>, 6<SP>11</SP>, heating the elongate cylindrical shaft portion and the other loop 7, 7<SP>1</SP>, 711, heating at least a portion of the flange 2 and the angle 5 between the root of the flange and the shaft, e.g. to produce a hardened layer 4. Thus, to heat different types of flanged shafts, only the loop 7, 7<SP>1</SP>, 7<SP>11</SP> requires replacement. The supply conductors 8, 8<SP>1</SP>, and 9, 9<SP>1</SP>, are placed side by side in such manner that one shields the other. In respect of their heating effects, and the uniformity of the heated layer 4 is further improved by relatively staggering, lengthwise of the shaft 1, the joints where the heating inductor portions 6<SP>1</SP>, 71 and 6, 7 abut, see also Figs. 3, 4 (not shown). The two inductor loops have separate transformers 12, 13, Fig. 5 (not shown), connecting them to a source, and separate capacitors 14, 15 and switches 18, 19 operable at different times and for different intervals under the control of timing devices 16, 17.
