Abstract

1380057 Vacuum vapour deposition XEROX CORP 23 Dec 1971 [28 Dec 1970] 59876/71 Heading C7F A flexible conductive layer is formed on the surface of an electric field deformable elastomer layer by vacuum evaporating a first conductive material and condensing it on said elastomer layer, and vacuum evaporating a second conductive material of lower melting point than said first material and condensing it over said elastomer layer coated with any material previously coated thereon. In the production of electro-photographic recording means, a substrate, if not conductive, is provided with a conductive layer, the latter being transparent if the former is also, and the body is coated with a photo-conductive layer which is itself coated with an elastomer which is deformable in response to an electrostatic charge image on the photo-conductor layer; the elastomer is then vapour-coated as above with a thin conductor layer flexible enough to "follow" deformations of the elastomer; if this layer is opaque then the substrate should be transparent. The preferred high- and low-melting materials are Au and In, and preferably 50 to several thousand Š of Au is deposited first followed by a similar thickness of In before "mud cracking" appears in the Au; simultaneous deposition may also be used. Other high-melting metals are Al, Ag; Mg, Cu, Co, Fe, Cr, and Ni and low-melting metals are Ga, Cd, Hg, and Pb. The thin conductive layer may be coated with an optional transparent oil layer.
