Abstract

1321769 Sputtering apparatus RCA CORPORATION 21 Oct 1971 [4 Dec 1970] 48931/71 Heading C7F [Also in Division H1] A sputtering apparatus comprises a cathode 56 which is insulated from base plate 34 by bush 52. A grounded shield 60 surrounds the cathode. A plate 58 of aluminium, copper or brass is attached to the cathode 56 and on the plate is mounted a target 74 of Zn or Ti. A grounded anode 62 has a transparent substrate 18 having a conductive layer 16 mounted thereon. Instead of reactive sputtering using a mixture of O 2 + Ar, non-reactive sputtering may be used where ZnO, TiO 2 , CdS, CdSe and ZnS are the materials sputtered. The transparent substrate may be glass, quartz or polyethylene terephthalate whilst the conductive layer may be Al, Cr or an oxide of In or Sn. Alternatively the substrate 18 and conductive layer 16 may be replaced by an opaque sheet of Al, Cr or stainless steel.
