Turning-gear. - An electric starting-motor 1 drives a starting-pinion 28 through reduction gearing 10, 7, a drum 14 keyed at 13 to the gear 7, and a shaft 16 on which is mounted a disk 18 keyed to the drum 14 at the end more remote from the driving-connexion 10, 7 with the starting-motor. A flanged nut 36 engages a screwthread 26 on the shaft 16 and has lugs engaging slots 38 in a barrel 33 integral with the pinion 28, a heavy spring 43 being interposed between the nut and a shoulder in the barrel. The parts are retained in place by annular screw caps 23, 40, a screw ring 14<1>, and a nut 17, and the pinion 28 slides within the neck 44 of the drum 14 and over the end 27 of the shaft 16. The screw-andnut connexion 26, 36 effects the automatic axial ruovement of the pinion 28 into gear with an engine member 29, this movement being limited by shoulders 49, 39. The slots 38 allow relative movement of the nut 36 and the barrel 33 if the gear teeth meet end to end, and also when the engine goes over compression points. A light spring 47 prevents the pinion 28 from creeping into engagement with the gear 29 when the engine is running. The end members 2, 3 of the motor are provided with lugs 4, 5 for mounting on the engine crank-case, and the gases 7, 10 are enclosed by a plate 11.
