Abstract

137,715. Hill, A., and Worthington & Co. April 22, 1919. Malt-turners.-Apparatus for turning over growing barley on a malt-house floor, or for clearing a " piece " of the floor, comprises a carriage which is caused to travel across the malt-house by means of an endless rope and carries a rotary brush and an adjustable shovel. The shovel 6 is mounted on slides 7 and adjusted in height by a handle 9, links 12, 14, and a bell-crank lever 13. The brush 15 is made of whalebone &c., and is shaped at the ends to project past the pillars supporting the roof, yielding as it passes them. The carriage is moved by a wire rope 21 passing over a driving-pulley 23, and the brush is rotated by a cotton rope 25 passing over a driving-pulley 29. Gearing for reversing, and regulating the speed of, the pulleys 23 and 29 is described. For regulating the tension of the ropes 21, 25, the pulleys at the end opposite to the driving-pulleys are carried on movable hangers, to which are attached cords passing over fixed pulleys and carrying weights.
