Abstract

588,875. Expanding-pulley gearing. ALEXAN-DER MACHINERY, Ltd., G. H., and WRIGHT, F. March 8, 1945, No. 5814. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIII] In a metal-cutting band saw machine of the horizontal type having a pivoted frame for carrying the saw, in which a cylinder and piston raise and control the descent of the frame and valve means control the rate of escape of the fluid from the cylinder (see Group XXIII), the sawdriving means comprise a V- grooved pulley 16 driven from an electric motor 31, a driven V- grooved pulley 17 and and intermediate spindle 18 moyable parallel to itself and having a pair of V-grooved pulleys mounted on it which are formed of two conical parts 19 fixed to it and a conical intermediate member which is slidable so that the relative diameters of the two pulleys on the spindle 18 are variable under tension of one or other of the belts 22, 23 passing over them, by movement of the spindle 18 parallel to itself. The spindle 18 is mounted on a non-rotatable spindle 24 attached to a block 25 slidable in a guide 26 and fixed to or in the form of a nut which receives a transverse screw 27 preferably having a bevel gear 28 engaging a second bevel gear 28 on the shaft 29 so that the position of the spindle 18 may be adjusted by rotation of the handle 30. The shaft of the pulley is connected by gearing to a sprocket carrying the band saw and the pulley 16 and motor 31 are mounted on an adjustable platform 32 to maintain the tension in the belts 22, 23.
