Abstract
1376620 Glass-metal glass display panels PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 9 Dec 1971 [12 Dec 1970] 57284/71 Heading C1M [Also in Division H1] In a device in which a body of electrically insulating material is held relative to a metal body, e.g. by fusing or sealing thereto, the metal body is oxidized so that it is covered with an adherent oxide layer which has a thickness relative to that of the underlying metal core such that the thermal coefficient of expansion of the body is substantially the same as that of the insulating body. The metal core may constitute a lead-in conductor or, as described in detail, an aluminium plate 0À2 mm. thick forming the intermediate apertured plate 3 of a gas discharge panel having outer glass plates 1 and 2. The oxide layer thickness may be 10 to 50% of the thickness of the core. The electrode strips 4 in the lower glass plate 1 are either flush with its surface, or seated at the bottom of cavities to increase the length of the discharge paths, while the electrodes 5.in the upper plate 1 are inset in channels 8 to permit communication between, and evacuation or gas filling of, the apertures 6 in the intermediate plate. Reference is made to the use of photographic etching techniques in the manufacture of the intermediate plate 3 if its thickness is less than 1 mm.; to the application of a potential to the plate 3 during operation; and to the use of several electrode plates and intermediate plates to provide a coloured display.
