Abstract

1289913 Gas-discharge display panels INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 11 May 1971 [9 June 1970] 14187/71 Heading H1D A plasma display panel 10 includes a gasfilled envelope 14 one wall of which includes or constitutes a sheet 18 of electrically insulating material, and means 20, 24 for selectively applying a potential difference between opposite surfaces of the sheet at localized areas thereof, the thickness of the sheet and the magnitude of the p.d. being such that in operation gas ionization occurs at localized areas with visible light output in the vicinity thereof. The envelope 14 of clear glass or other translucent insulating material is sealed at its edge 16 to an insulating base 12 supporting the glass or ceramic sheet 18 and is filled with an inert gas, e.g. Ne at a pressure of 200 torr. or Ne + H at a pressure of 150 torr. Metal electrodes 20, 1 Á to several mils. thick, are applied to the top surface of base 12, e.g. by electrodeposition, and electrodes 24 are similarly applied to the top surface 22 of sheet 18. Application of 500 v. A.C. to selected electrodes 20 and 24 through a switch (not shown) produces localized corona discharges on the surface of sheet 18. Electrodes 24 are normally exposed to the gas filling, but may be protected by an insulating layer 36 to decrease sputtering and increase the memory effect.
