Abstract

1422402 Gas discharge display panels F J PURCHASE 26 March 1973 [18 April 1972] 14469/73 Heading H1D A display device comprises a scanning portion and a display portion connected by conductive members 30 controlled by photo-conductive members 36. The scanning portion includes a glass plate 48 having grooves 52 in which are mounted stainless steel strip electrodes 54. A glass plate 44 has a coating 46 of tin oxide. The space between the plates is filled with an ionizable gas, e.g. neon, and is divided. by anodized aluminium strips 56 provided with notches 58 to allow the passage of ions. The display portion includes a glass plate 22 with a transparent coating 24 of tin oxide, and an opaque plate 26 of glass or plastics supporting the members 30. The space 28 between the plates is filled with neon. The members 30 are aluminium plugs having grooves 32 in which the photo-conductive members 36 are mounted and insulated therefrom by a layer 34 formed by anodizing. Each photo-conductive member 36 is connected at its centre to a laterally extending electrode 38 and is connected at its edges by connectors 40 to its associated member 30. Application of a voltage between one of the strip electrodes 54 and the coating 46 creates a discharge which illuminates and lowers the resistance of a column of the members 30. Application of a signal to an electrode 38 selects one member of the column and a discharge is produced between that member 30 and the coating 24. Circuits are described (Figs. 6 and 9, not shown) in which the number of necessary connections is reduced by providing a common connection to every fourth strip electrode 54. The number of connections necessary when connecting a plurality of the devices together (Fig. 12, not shown) may be reduced by multiplexing the addressing of the electrodes 38.
