Abstract
1386021 Gas discharge display panels FUJITSU Ltd 13 Oct 1972 [15 Oct 1971 (2)] 47480/72 Heading H1D An addressable gas discharge display device having an array of paired discharge electrodes, which may be addressed, for example, by a cross-bar conductor system, has all its electrodes disposed at the same surface of the discharge space formed between two parallel plates, but are separated from that space by a dielectric film, whereby when a write-in voltage is superimposed-for a selected one or more of the electrode pairs-upon an alternating sustain voltage maintained between the two pairs of electrode arrays, the discharge is thereafter maintained by the sustain voltage, due to the memory function of the dielectric film. In the embodiment of Fig. 2, the electrodes 2a and 4a, together with an electrode array for conductors 4a, are formed on the insulating layer 3 and are separated from the discharge space 7 by a dielectric film 5, e.g. of solder glass, the electrodes 2a being connected through the layer 3 to a conductor array formed on its under surface. In other embodiments, the conductor arrays for both sets of electrodes are formed in the same plane, on base-plate 1 (Fig. 5, not shown), an insulating layer portion (23) being provided between them only at each crossing point; or the conductor arrays are formed on opposite faces of the insulating layer 3, which is unperforated; or the proportion of each discharge path located in the gaseous medium may be increased by forming the electrode portions on opposite sides of U- or V-shaped continuous grooves in the base-plate 1 (Figs. 8 and 9, not shown) or on diametrically opposite sides of hemispherical depressions formed in the base-plate, one at each crossing point (Figs. 10 and 11, not shown). A numeral display panel, Figs. 15 and 16, includes 8-shaped patterns of triple conductors, the centre conductors 84 of each triple being individually connected to separate leads 91 to 98, while the two outer conductors 82a and 82b of all the triples are connected in series to a common lead 90. The device may be filled with a neon/nitrogen mixture. Methods of fabrication, involving printed circuit techniques, are described.
