Abstract
1371947 Bi-stable induction relays; vacuum switches MAX-PLANCK-GES ZUR FORDERUNG DER WISSENSCHAFTEN EV 25 Feb 1972 [26 Feb 1971] 8896/72 Heading H1N An induction switch has non-ferromagnetic parts including a conductive armature 12 disposed between two axially aligned coreless coils 10 such that alternate energization of the coils induces eddy currents in the armature to effect movement thereof. The armature 12 is secured to an operating rod 14 which is axially movable between two stable positions into which it is biased by a plurality of flat springs 26 each engaging a rigid member 30 rockable in a collar 32 on the rod 14. The end of the rod 14 engages a movable contact 40 and backing spring 42 to move it to engage a fixed contact 38 when the rod 14 is urged to the left. In a superconducting switch the members 38, 40 may be made of Nb 3 Sn coated in the contact area with tin or copper and the switch is built into a closed metallic housing submerged in liquid helium. The switching chamber vacuum may be due to condensated gas such as CO 2 .
