Abstract

1370715 Developing electrostatic latent images INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 24 Feb 1972 [30 March 1971] 8526/72 Heading G2H A toner replenishment device, which adds replacement toner to a carrier/toner developer mixture as the toner is used up in the development of electrostatic latent images, comprises a hopper 34, a rotatable coil 28 and an apertured plate 40, through which the toner is forced by rotation of the coil. A second coil 30 is supported coaxially with, and preferably within, the coil 28, and is would in the opposite sense. As hollow support member 38 and the coils 28 and 30 rotate contaminents that are too large to pass through the apertures in the plate 40, and any masses of caked toner, pass through the centre of the coil 30, counter to the flow of toner imposed by the coil 28, and are discharged into a container 44. Preferably the replenishment device is attached to a cascade development apparatus, and a sensor determines the proportion of toner in the carrier/toner mixture and operates the replenishment device when necessary.
