Abstract

135,873. Tondeur, R. July 16, 1914, [Convention date]. Automatic speed or power control.-Two expanding pulleys are combined and controlled by a centrifugal governor so as to form automaticallyvariable speed gearing suitable for motor-vehicles, acting also as differential or balance gearing, and also as an automatic coupling or clutch. Two inner flanges A are rigid with a hollow shaft O which is driven through a chain-wheel O<1> from the engine and is suitably supported in bearings R. Outer flanges A<1> have sliding connexions E with the bosses of the flanges A, and are connected by rods t to blocks K, which slide within the shaft 0 and are pressed apart by a spring r<1>, Pins project from the blocks K through slots a in the shaft O and make connexion with sliding sleeves D, which are connected by links b to centrifugal masses B formed as joints. A guide C braces the links b. Belts G driving the road wheels separately normally lie on loose bearing- rings r. When the engine is started, the governor pulls the blocks K inwards against the spring r<1> until the flanges a<1> grip the belts G and commence the drive. 'While running, the governor controls the speed of the vehicle so that the engine runs at most economical speed. Differential action takes place by the flanges A<1>, blocks K, and governor moving laterally as a whole.
