Abstract

1356565 Regulating I C engine fuel supply RICARDO & CO ENGS (1927) Ltd and J D DAVIS 3 Sept 1971 [4 Sept 1970] 42487/70 Heading F1B The maximum delivery position of the control rack 36 of a fuel injection pump 37 of a diesel engine 10 is controlled by a device 12 measuring the smoke density of the exhaust. The device 12 provides an output signal which operates an electro-hydraulic, electro-mechanical or electropneumatic control system which reduces the maximum fuel supply as the smoke density increases. The device 12 may be an electrode mounted in the downstream end of the exhaust pipe 11, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), or a diverging pipe (40), Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), mounted to receive the exhaust gases from the pipe 11. The device is connected to an electronic amplifier 21 and a power amplifier 29 to actuate a three-way valve 30 which directs engine oil under pressure from a pump 31 to an hydraulic actuator 34 or back to the engine crank-case. The plunger of the actuator 34 provides a maximum delivery stop for the rack 36.
