Abstract

1353992 Forging; making tubes F KOCKS 27 May 1971 [22 June 1970] 17377/71 Addition to 1335611 Headings B3H and B3A A stretch forging machine has a set of swing- ing jaws arranged to be driven by crank or eccentric drive and the working surfaces of the jaws are shaped to define a closed sizing gap when the jaws are closed together. The gap is shaped to allow the workpiece to flow radially over part of its surface in the entry zone of the gap. In one embodiment with four jaws 2a, Fig. 6, the jaws have a transverse curvature in the initial zone whose radius R 1 is greater than the distance A from the jaw surface to the workpiece axis. Thus the jaws contact the workpiece centrally and allow it to broaden. In a second embodiment, Fig. 7, the said distance is equal to the curvature R 2 of the jaw surface, however, the edge zones T 1 , T 2 are straight to allow the workpiece to broaden. The working surfaces of the jaws gradually change, Figs. 2-5 (not shown), so that at the exit zone they define a circular bore. The workpiece is rotated after each forging stroke. The tube reduced by the stretch forging machine may be subsequently stretch rolled. The working surfaces of the jaws are shaped by machining. Specification 1,353,993 is directed to the machining of the jaws.
