Abstract

Apparatus for forming grooves in a workpiece comprises a set of jaws to grip the workpiece and at least one block with inclined guide surfaces which cause the jaws to move towards the centre of the workpiece when they are forced into the channel in the block defined by the surfaces. In one embodiment three jaws 1-3 surround the workpiece 7 and a pair of jaws co-operate with guide surfaces 4, 5 and move inwards when the other jaw is moved by a ram towards the block 6. In a second embodiment, four jaws 8-11 are provided in a pair of blocks 12, 13. The blocks are moved together to cause the jaws to move towards the centre of the workpiece 18. The grooves may be helical or parallel to the workpiece axis. Annular grooves may be formed intersecting longitudinal grooves The workpiece may be flattened at the jaw connections prior to forming to prevent burr formation. After forming the workpiece may be hardened by cementation, carbon-nitriding followed by tempering.
