Abstract

1,080,481. Rolling threads. ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS Inc. Aug. 4, 1964 [July 30, 1963], No. 31234/64. Heading B3M. [Also in Division F2] A thread rolling die 14, suitable for simultaneously rolling threads of different sizes on a screw, Fig. 2 (not shown), includes parallel grooves 30, 32 which are of different depths and which taper along their lengths. The die is reciprocated relative to a similar fixed die 12 to form the threads. The deeper grooves 32 commence with a relatively broad V-shaped cross-section which becomes progressively shallower, the cross-section then merging into one formed with a narrower V-shape. Three or more grooves of different depths may be formed on the dies to produce appropriately threaded screws. Each die is formed with cut away portions 34 and 36 to ease feeding and ejecting of blanks, and with a section 38 of constant cross-section so that the thread profile of a finished screw is the same around its circumference.
