Abstract

830,500. Rolling tubes. MICHIGAN TOOL CO. Sept. 20, 1957 [March 1, 1957], No. 29732/57. Class 83 (4). In a method of forming the internal surface of a tube to a predetermined shape, e.g. to form splines, serrations, internal threads, gears or oil grooves, small portions of the tube lying on a helical path are successively pressed with a rolling action inwardly against a mandrel of complementary shape. A hardened metal mandrel 16 having a plurality of external splines 17 is attached to a spindle, the tube 20 being rotatably mounted at one end over the mandrel and at the other on a centre. The inside of the tube adjacent the mandrel is rolled between hydraulically reciprocated platens 24, 25 mounted on slides 26, 28. The tube may be heated or may be rolled at room temperature. The working surface of each die 24, 25 comprises a ridge 36 which exerts pressure to force a narrow helical band of the tube on to the mandrel, the ridge being sufficiently wide for the bands to overlap and so press the length of tube traversed by the ridge during the working stroke of the die. Each ridge has side surfaces 37, 38 to form shoulders 39, 41, Fig. 4 (not shown), on the work and the dies and ridges have relieving taper at the ends so that the pressure is applied and released gradually. The tube is rotated by the dies which are adjustable by gibs 31 to suit the size of the tube. Alternatively the platens are provided with V-shaped ridges. In a modification the platens may be replaced by circular dies with a helical ridge.
