Abstract
1351297 Water loads VARIAN ASSOCIATES 19 April 1971 [24 April 1970] 26004/71 Heading H1W The dielectric loading of a liquid load apparatus is reduced by a dielectric structure 13 having a dielectric constant substantially less than that of the liquid. The dielectric is preferably PTFE and the liquid water. The apparatus comprises an input section of air filled coaxial line 2 connected to a loss section of coaxial line 3 through an impedance matching section 4 in which the inner conductor 6 of the input line 2 is undercut at 8 and the outer conductor 7 is enlarged at 9 to receive a PTFE sealing disc 5. The loss section 3 comprises a delay line section 18 and a transition section 19 in which the diameter of the turns of the inner conductor 11, which is preferably of stainless steel or other high temperature resistant alloy, is gradually increased to a constant value in section 18. Water passes from an input conduit 14 through inclined bores 22 in the PTFE sleeve 13 to an output conduit 15 in a conductive wave-reflecting end wall 16. The sleeve 13 may be bored to a larger internal diameter in the delay line section 18 than in section 19, and other types of delay line than a helix may be employed.
