Abstract

1350790 Spray carburetters J H GRAFFMAN 17 June 1971 [17 June 1970] 28481/71 Heading F1B I. C. engine carburetter has an injection nozzle with a spring-loaded valve and is supplied with petrol under pulsating pressure, the petrol being fed to the nozzle through a conduit having connected thereto an adjustable relief valve through which excess petrol is discharged, so that the correct quantity of petrol reaches the nozzle. Petrol is drawn from a tank 1 by a pump 2 and fed to a channel 13. A pulse generator 5 forces the fuel past a valve member 21 into a channel 14 leading to the nozzle, excess fuel being returned to the tank through a conduit 6. The pressure of the fuel in channel 14 causes it to open a valve 17 in the nozzle, against the pressure of a spring 18, the tension of which is adjustable by a nut 19. The valve member 21 is biased to the closed position by a spring 22 which abuts the lower end of a rod 23, the upper end of which is attached to a diaphragm 26. The upper and lower sides of this diaphragm are connected by pipes 32 and 31 respectively to points in the air intake passage 16 which are upstream and downstream of a flow restrictor formed by a flange 33. The pressure drop across this flow restriction is communicated to the opposite sides of the diaphragm and causes it to adopt a position which is related to the air flow. The position of the diaphragm affects the tension of the spring 22, so that the amount of fuel which enters the conduit 14 is proportional to the airflow. The construction enables the height of the carburetter to be reduced. Instead of a single jet, the channel 14 may feed into an annular duct which projects radially into the air flow passage and forms a restriction. There are a number of apertures in the radially inner periphery of the annulus, each controlled by a valve member similar to the member 17. In a further modification the diaphragm is mounted above the inlet to the air passage and the diaphragm housing forms the lid of an annular air-cleaner which surrounds the air passage.
