Abstract
1350292 Removing smudge from sealed anodized aluminium ALUMINUM CO OF AMERICA 16 June 1971 28218/71 Heading C7B A process for improving an anodic oxide coating which has not been organic dye coloured and which is present on an "aluminium" substrate comprises sealing the anodic oxide coating by treating it with an aqueous hydrolyzable metallic salt and removing at least some of the sealing smudge by treating the coating with at least one aqueous mineral acid to leave the anodic coating in a sealed condition. Any remaining smudge may be removed by wet wiping. The word "aluminium" is used to mean Al and Al base alloys containing 50 weight per cent or more by wt. of Al. The anodic oxide may be produced using a H 2 SO 4 or sulphophalic acid/ sulphuric acid electrolyte. The metallic salt of the sealing step may be an acetate or sulphate of Ni or Co. The acid of the smudge-removing step may be HNO 3 , HCl, H 2 SO 4 , H 3 PO 4 , H 2 CRO 4 or a mixture of two or more of these.
