Abstract
1349509 Aqueous fire-fighting foams IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 22 June 1971 [13 July 1970] 33896/70 Heading ASA An aqueous fire-fighting foam comprises (i) a foaming agent, (ii) a flame-retardant bromine- or iodine-containing compound having a B.Pt. of -100 to +200C, and (iii) a surfactant containing a terminal aliphatic perfluorocarbon chain of at least 3C. The foaming agent (i) may be a protein, a synthetic surfactant, polyvinyl alcohol, a salt of an acrylic acid/styrene copolymer or a cellulose ether or ester; and may be used in anhydrous or "aqueous concentrate" form to give a 0.05-10% by wt. solution in water. Numerous flame-retardants (ii) are specified, those containing Br+F being preferred. The surfactant (iii) is particularly one derived from a tetrafluoroethylene oligomer. The foam may be blown with air, N 2 , CO 2 , or A, or by the vapour of component (ii) alone if it is of low B.Pt. The constituents may be mixed from separate pipes at the time of use.
