Abstract

Corrosion is inhibited in liquid cooling systems such as that of a motor car, by using a composition comprising an alkali metal salt of a branched chain saturated acyclic carboxylic acid, an alkali metal nitrite, and a buffer agent which is an alkali metal borate or phosphate. When alcohols containing two or more hydroxyl groups are included in the cooling system the above composition prevents their deterioration. The carboxylate should preferably contain 8 or 9 carbon atoms with 5-7 in a straight chain. It is preferable to use 0,1 to 0,5 parts by weight of borate or phosphate for each part of carboxylate. The composition may be made up as a solution in an alcohol containing two or more hydroxyl groups, in water, or in mixtures thereof. Unless hard water is used for making up solutions, small amounts of calcium and magnesium salts are preferably added, usually containing anions already present in the solution. Specification 838,258 is referred to.ALSO:Alcohols containing two or more hydroxyl groups are stabilized by a mixture of an alkali metal salt of a branched chain acyclic saturated aliphatic carboxylic acid, an alkali metal nitrite and an alkali metal borate or phosphate. Examples are given in which ethylene glycol is used. Also mentioned are propylene glycol, glycerol, erythritol, mannitol and sorbitol. The carboxylate preferably contains 8 or 9 carbon atoms with 5 to 7 carbon atoms in a straight chain. Specification 838,258 is referred to.
