Abstract

A foam detergent composition comprises a quaternary ammonium salt with a C12- 18 aliphatic radical, a foam improver, a low M.W. monomeric alcohol, e.g. hexylene glycol, and a further surfactant which may be anionic, nionic or amphoteric. Specified surfactants include lauric diethanolamide, N-coco-b -amino butyric acid, polyoxyethylene esters of fatty and resin acids optionally complexed with urea or other nitrogen compounds, polyoxyethylene ethers, ether alcohols, aralkyl ethers (which may be combined with urea or other nitrogen compounds) with sorbitol or with polyoxyethylene sorbitol, t.-octyl phenol or nonyl phenol/ ethylene oxide condensates, dialkyl sulphosuccinic esters, coconut fatty acid diethanolamide condensation products with ethylene oxide, mixed alkyl/aryl condensation products with ethylene oxide and polyoxyethylene sorbitan esters of fatty acids. The foam improver may be starch, CMC, hydroxyethyl cellulose or a polymer which may be a high M.W. carboxy vinyl polymer, a polyacrylamide which may be of high M.W. and neutral, of M.W. 5-6 million and non-ionic or of extremely high M.W. and water soluble, a low M.W. anionic copolymer of acrylamide and acrylic acid or a hydrolysed polyacrylonitrile. missing page 266ALSO:A foam composition especially for firefighting comprises a quaternary ammonium salt with a C12-18 aliphatic radical, a further surfactant, a low m.w. monomeric alcohol, e.g. hexylene glycol and a foam improver which may be a cellulosic material e.g. starch or CMC or a high M.W. carboxyvinyl polymer, a neutral high M.W. polyacrylamide, a low M.W. acrylic acid/acrylamide anionic copolymer, a non-ionic homopolymer of acrylamide with M.W. 5-6 million, a water-soluble polyacrylamide of extremely high M.W. (5-6 million) or a hydrolysed poly acrylonitrile. Numerous "further surfactants" which may be anionic, nonionic or amphoteric are specified.
