Abstract
1348668 Furnace roof GEO P REINTJES CO Inc 19 April 1971 [5 Feb 1970] 21085/71 Heading F4B The circular (or elliptical) conventionally suspended roof of an electric arc furnace is formed from concentric rows of tapered bricks which are all of the same size, appropriate numbers of evenly spaced bricks in each of the rows being inserted in a reversed position to form a completely closed row of the correct radius. Asbestos expansion shims may be inserted at desired intervals between certain of the concentric brick rows and between some of the bricks in each row. Single tapered bricks are used to form a flat roof and triple tapered bricks are used to form a domed roof. The outer brick rows are of steel cased bricks but the inner rows may be of uncased bricks. Given the desired roof dimensions, the number of brick rows to be used, the spacing and sizes of the shims, and certain characterizing brick dimensions, a method is disclosed for calculating a suitable size of brick for use in the construction, and the numbers of bricks which must be inserted in the normal and in the reversed positions in each of the concentric brick rows.
