Abstract

1,146,062. Suspended furnace roofs. GENERAL REFRACTORIES CO. 8 Aug., 1966 [27 Dec., 1965], No. 35411/66. Heading F4B. Magnesia, chrome magnesia, or magnesia chrome refractory roof bricks 32 are suspended by wire hangers 61 from sets of corset plates 37, provided with supporting feet 41, which may have lateral openings therein. Aligned recesses 42 are formed in the opposed ends of adjacent corset plates, which overlap, and holddown beams 44 are inserted in these recesses to rest on their bottom surfaces 45. The beams 44, which are supported by pipes 52 from crossbeams 51 are thereby spaced above the cold ends of bricks 32, to allow cooling air to circulate. Tension members 55 are then secured across the tops of the hold-down beams 44, between adjacent corset plates 37, which together with the bricks 32 are thereby prevented from rising or falling. In modifications (Figs. 14 and 15) rows of sprung arch bricks supported from skewbacks may be inserted between the rows of suspended bricks. At the end of a furnace campaign the roof may be replaced by cutting the tension members 55 causing the old bricks and the corset plates to fall on to the furnace hearth, the bricks for the new roof being supported on temporary forms 30 extending from the skewbacks 31 until erection of the supporting structure is completed. The roof may be applied to open hearth furnaces, when the corset plates extend transversely and the holddown beams longitudinally of the furnace, or to circular electric hearth furnaces.
