Abstract

1413171 Walking beam furnaces SALEM ENG CO Ltd 26 Jan 1973 [29 Jan 1972] 4262/72 Heading F4B A walking beam furnace in which billets to be heated are supported on and advanced by fixed and movable beams, comprises a topfired initial heating section 3 in which the beams are of refractory material and a top-and-bottom fired soaking section 5 in which the fixed and movable beams are water-cooled tubular structures, the beams in the two sections being arranged to provide a continuous hearth so that the billets advance smoothly over the junction 7 between them. All the movable beams are driven from a common drive including traversing beam 13 and lifting beam 14. A water seal 43, provided to prevent air entering the furnace section 5, consists of a trough of water and dipper plates on the beams of the initial heating section. The ends of these beams are also cooled by water ducts and the fixed beams are cooled along their whole length in the same way.
