Abstract

732,793. Tunnel kilns. PILKINGTON'S TILES, Ltd. July 3, 1953 [July 4, 1952], No 16793/53. Class 51 (2). [Also in Group XXX] In a tunnel kiln utilizing a "walking beam" type of conveyer for the passage of articles therethrough, the "walking beam" is raised by unidirectionally rotating lifting cams, the traversing movement being controlled by a cam follower or followers on the "beam" engaged by a unidirectionally rotating control cam or cams, and the "beam" carries a central portion built up on refactory material, the normal level thereof coinciding with the level of two outer members forming with the upper surface of the central portion, the base of the kiln. The kiln shown is formed of a refractory material A, A<SP>1</SP>, and is provided with ducts a to house electrical heating elements a<SP>1</SP>. The kiln base is formed by outer members A<SP>2</SP> and a portion B which is carried by a "walking beam" B<SP>1</SP>. The "beam" is supported at each end of the kiln on lifting cams C mounted on shafts c, which are caused to rotate via worm gearing c<SP>3</SP> and a shaft c<SP>6</SP> disposed along the length of the kiln by an electric motor c<SP>5</SP>. Mounted on the shaft c at the feed end of the kiln is a cam C<SP>1</SP> adapted for engagement with a follower c<SP>1</SP> secured to the "beam". Both cams C raise and lower the "beam" and are in contact with it continuously, such that were it not for the control cam C<SP>1</SP> and follower c<SP>1</SP> the "beam" would undergo continuous forward movement. The control cam C<SP>1</SP> ensures that the "beam" is rested and moved rearwardly against the rotation of the lifting cam C at predetermined time intervals. Positive forward movement of the "beam" may be ensured by the provision of another cam-C<SP>2</SP> on the shaft c at the feed end of the kiln adapted to co-act with a follower c<SP>1</SP> secured to the "beam". The beam b<SP>1</SP> is provided with fins b3 projecting into sand seals a<SP>3</SP>, and is stiffened by fins b<SP>1</SP> and, at each end, by I-section members B2, one section member and the beam carrying pairs of horizontal guide rollers b' engaging vertical rollers b<SP>6</SP>, whereby any warping &c. of the beam may be compensated. Slits may be provided in the upper flange of B1 for expansion &c. and one or more vents a<SP>5</SP> may be provided for release of any gases generated in the kiln.
