Abstract

Carbonaceous material is continuously coked or devolatilized or calcined on a hearth 11 in a heated oven, the material being continuously delivered at 30 to the periphery of the hearth and moved continuously to an outlet 12 at the centre of the hearth, the material being turned over during its passage across the hearth. The hearth is circular and is rotated on rollers 13, by means not shown, sintable sand seals being provided at 17, 53. The fixed cover 21 has a flue outlet 22, air inlets 25, 27, fuel burner 29, and a pit 32, see also Fig. 3 (not shown), in its upper surface. The floor of the pit has slots 33 (Fig. 3) accommodating refractory seals 38 bearing coolant conduits 36, 37 which act as supports for vertically adjustable, hollow rabbles 34, see also Fig. 5 (not shown). The rabbles are set, see Fig. 4 (not shown), to guide the material inwardly at each revolution of the hearth, the height of the rabbles above the hearth determining the proportion of material retained at each revolution at a given distance from the outlet 12. In a modification, Figs. 8 to 10 (not shown), the hearth 11 has concentric steps, each step having above it a pair of staggered rabbles of which the leading rabble is higher than the trailing rabble to facilitate turning over of the material.
