Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented llf eli. ll llll ltll.
npplicationfiled-August 4, 1910. Serial No. 575. 102.
To all whomit may concern: I
lie it known. that; l; Jain-1s Nmo a subject" of the Kinu of lreat Britain and irrlauth and a resil. lt cl" East; ll au'i l lFfx, lflugland 5 have invented certain new and useful Improvements in .Mjipai'atus for Distilling Shale and other l litumiumls Substances; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, elear and exact description of the same. V
This invent'ap relates to improvements in apparatus 1 distilling shale and other bitum'inous s i. ances.
The inve 1 ion has for its objeetto insure the gradg al and uniform heating of the shale oipthe like being treated, and. to avoid the upeltiren heating which occurs at the sides and 'ee nt'er pfithe customary vertical retorts, and the di'lliculties of firing incidental to the use of horizontal retorts.
According to the present invention the improved retort or still has sides of astepped cylindrical form ation, and is arranged witlit its widest diameter uppermost and its smaller dia meter lmvermost so that its inside presents series of horizontal or approximately lmrizontal concentric ledges Ihe retortis setin the combustion chamber or flue of a "furnace so that the outside? I v f the retort exposed to the heat of the latter, the lowermost part of the retort being suh jeotcd to the greatest heat. Inside the retort, are arranged rotary rakes or arms which are adapted to sweep around, said ledges and "5 gradually Work the substance under treatilnent, which is fed onto the highermost led ge through suitably placed hoppers, around the ledges and down from ledge t0 ledge. The exl'iausted shale is discharged'at the bottom 40 of the retort, and the vapo evolved from the shale are led off from the still head to any suitable corulensing apparatus wherein the products are recoveredin known main nor. The substance under treatment is thus '45 caused to take aprolonged path in deseending, through the retort to the discharge out-. lot and its Whole mass is gradually. and evenly subjected to the increased tempera tare. l The invention is illustrated inthe accompanying drawings, in whiehz Figure L is a sectional elevation; Fig. 2. is a plan ;-Fig. 3, is a seetionalelevation at right angles to Fig. 1 Fig. 4, is a sectional Referring to the d awingz s, 1L. is the retort constructed of a stepped eiwyliinlrieijil tin niatiou as aforcsahl. Tlhv retort set l'ire brick cl'tamber ll having 5 side part of an inverted )nieal a.' at I1 and its lower in .e part oi. liudrieal formation, at 12-. A ct'nnbustion Space or flue, l), thus left between the re 7 tort and the chamber ill. 'Fl'ie retort niade with a central dischart a, lower end leading into a p v n provided with eonv er, ll, torreinoair the spent portions oi? 1e shale or the li t from the apparatus. l urnaees ll, are titted on each side of the pit and lll'itllikl'lltttll'l the re combustion or fine spare for luartin the retort, and are connected to a chii'zilney, notshown, by fines, b 7

F- are rakes or arms Illtllll'lllit'l on a ver'ti. cal shaft, f passing axially through the reto'rtand supported in upper :uullower hear ings, e, e. The shaft. is d riven enteriutlly an of the retortby a Worm Wheel. ti, and. worn'l 9 ,1) a shaft, 5 or in any othm nwenient manner. The shaft, g, is adap to drire the conveyor. by wheels or l'illlll-fy fi 5;, and (Z1, and a chain or belt, ll. at a suitable speed. I are hoppers .t'orfceding; the shale or other bituminous substance into the retort. The hoppers: are furnished with slide-a t. or other suitable (illlvlt'lfi for insuring; a re; 'ular supply of the suhslaimo to be treated, so which is preferably ground or broken up before being introduced into the retort. The. slides, i, are normally closed by spriuns, 2', and are adapted to be movedinward so as to uncover the openings, 4. by a rotary arln. J. onthe shaft; f There is no ne eessity for the provision of means for independently regulating the supply and dis-- charge of the substance, as the conveyor is "adapted to discharge from the retort the liltmaximum (piautity of sul; s.u'1ce the hoppers areadapted to feed into the retort.
jSteam. may be fed. into the lower part: of
the retort through api-pe, K to aid in conveying the oil vapors from the liead of the W5 retort. and by becoming super-iv ited to aid 'in heating up the suhstanee the upper.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Leters-Patenfi is:-
' 1. In apparatus for distiliing shale and other bituminous substances, in combination, -21 fu rhace, e retort having sides of a stepped cylindrical formation and arranged in the combustion chamber or flue of the furnace with its Widest diameter uppernimsl and. its smallest diii'meteriowermost so that the inside presents it series of horizontal or approximately horizontal coneentfic ledges of essen- ,ing ditimeter, means for feeding the n etei-iel onto the highermost ledge, and means for Working the material aroundihe ledges and down, from led 'e to lodge to a discharge UHF let, substentielry as described.
2. In'appmratus for (instilling shale andother bituminous substances, inv combination, uifurnace, :1 io'loi'bhaving sides ofei stepped cylindrical formation and arranged in the combustion chamber or flue of the furnace with its Widest diameter uppermost and its smallest diameter lowermost so that the inside presents 21' series of horizontal or eppi'oximai'ely horizontal concentric ledges, means for intermittently feedingthe material onto the highen'nostt ledge, and rotary rakes or arms adapted to sweep around said legee and gradually ork the suostenee.
In apparatus for distilling shale and other bitinninous substances, in combination, a furnace a retoi-fi having sides of e stepped oylinclrieei formation and arranged in the combustion chamber or fine of the furnace with i? widest diameter uppermost and its smallestdiameter lowermost so that the in side'prosent i series of horizontal 01' hp proximetel means for :L'iihg the material onto the higheimos lMlQQU ITLl'IS-S or arms mounted on a rotary shaft and adapted to work the substzinee under treatment around the and down from ledge to ledge to e centroi discharge pit, and a conveyor driven 01f said shaft and adapted to remove the treated substance from the apparatus, substantially 1 as described In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
