Abstract

846,466. Continuous metal-heating furnaces. SVENSKA METALLVERKENS UGNS A.B. Oct. 3, 1956, No. 30200/56. Class 51 (2). In a continuous ingot-heating furnace divided into a preheating zone C, a heating zone B, and an equalizing zone A, ingots fed from a feeding device 1 are pushed through the preheating and heating zones on skid rails, and are traversed through the equalizing zone on a walking-beam conveyer, which rolls each ingot in turn over cooled pipes 24 on to a transverse discharge channel 25. The feeding device comprises a storage platform 2 from which ingots are pushed by a ram 3 on to a vertically movable table 4, which is lowered to the level of the skid rails, the ingots being then pushed through the furnace by a ram 6. The skid rails, Fig. 3 (not shown), are made of heat-resisting steel or, in the hottest region, of highly refractory material. The walking-beam conveyer comprises stationary outer supports and a movable inner support, Fig. 4, built up of refractory brickwork 17, e.g. chamotte, carried by bars 18, and lined on top with magnesite bricks 16. The support is raised by pivoted cranks 20 actuated by an hydraulic cylinder 22, and the horizontal movements by an hydraulic cylinder 23. The forward movement may be made or may be initiated by an ingot striking the support. The furnace is heated by roof burners 12 above the walking beam, end wall burners 11 and a burner 10 in a combustion chamber 9 below the skid rails, immediately before the walking beam.
