Abstract

1368480 Skid rails; supports for furnace charges RUST FURNACE CO 16 Dec 1971 [23 Feb 1971] 58539/71 Heading F4B In a reheating or heat treatment furnace, the charge supports comprise bridge-like structures of pipes for cooling fluid, each structure comprising more than one pipe and spanning the space between its ends. In a walling beam furnace, Fig. 1, a number of beams 32 each comprising an upper tube 34, a lower tube 35 and intermediate tubes 36, 37, 38 bent to connect the upper and lower tubes extend between movable platforms 41 each mounted on a partition bounding a furnace zone. The platforms 41 are reciprocated on rollers 43, Fig. 3, mounted in a slot in a partition wall 22 and screened from the furnace by the platform 41. Lifting beams 33, of similar construction, are carried by pillars 46 enclosing the coolant supply tubes and sliding in sleeves 48 passing through the partition wall 22. Beams 83, movable both vertically and horizontally, Fig. 9, may be used with stationary bridge structures. In a furnace having vertically and horizontally movable cooled bridge structures 131, Fig. 12 extending part way through the first heat zone 113 of the furnace. Conventionally supported skid rails extend between the movable supports 131. Solid refractory supports extend from near the ends of the skid rails to the discharge end of the furnace, and movable refractory beams 141 extend from near the end of bridge-like supports 131. The supports 131 and refractory supports 141 are linked for common longitudinal movement, so that a slot in a refractory beam 141 can fit snugly round the end of a cooled truss 131. The beams 141, 131 are independently lifted however, the arrangement being such that, from their extreme position nearest the charge end, both sets of beams are raised and moved forwardly a half stroke, the cooled trusses 131 are then lowered and the beams and trusses complete the forward stroke, the refractory beams 141 are lowered and the beams and trusses complete the cycle, so that billets 20 packed closely in transit through the preheating zone and into the first heating zone, are spread out in the second heating zone and in the soaking zone. Downwardly directed flues 165 are provided at the end of the preheating zone A furnace is described in which downdraught flues at the discharge end prevent cold air entering the furnace proper, Fig 6 (not shown).
