Abstract

1,010,294. Roller hearth furnaces. UNIVERSALE INDUSTRIEOFENBAU G.m.b.H. April 30, 1962 [June 20, 1961], No. 16445/62. Heading F4B. In a roller hearth annealing furnace for metallic stock, e.g. metal sheets in which at least a number of the hearth rollers are power driven, a lifting grate is disposed in one section of the furnace and is adapted to reach between the hearth rollers and to be raised and lowered above and below the plane of the hearth rollers. The grate when raised supports the metallic stock and enables it to be heated to higher temperature than would be allowable if it rested on the rollers. In the form shown a furnace is divided into two sections by a movable damper 7 actuated by an hydraulic ram 8. Into section 1 of the furnace is introduced stock to be heated. The stock is propelled through this section on rotating rollers 3 and heated to a temperature which is non-injurious to the hearth rollers 3. The damper 7 is lowered and the stock is conveyed on rollers 3 into a second section 2 of the furnace the damper being raised again after passage of the stock. The stock which is located in the section 2 of the furnace is then raised off of the hearth rollers 3 by means of a lifting grate 11 which is adapted to reach between the rollers 3. The stock is then heated solely from above to the desired final temperature and the rollers are protected from injurious overheating effects by the fact that they lay in a heat shadow of the material being heated and the fact that they are continuously rotating and cooling air is passed through them, the air subsequently being used for combustion. Once the desired temperature is reached the lifting grate 11 is lowered and the stock progresses out of the furnace on the rollers 3. The lifting grate 11 is raised and lowered hydraulically by a ram 13 driven from a pump 15 the grate being guided by means of guiding frames 14. The individual lifting grate element 10 consists of rectangular frames of high-alloy heat resistance material and are lined with fire-proof brick or tamping compound. Coolant chambers or channels may also be provided within the frames.
