Abstract

1348053 Photographic diffusion transfer POLAROID CORP 29 March 1971 8088/71 Heading G2C An image-receiving element for the silver salt diffusion transfer process comprises (a) a first stratum into which diffusible silver complex can transfer, that is permeable to alkaline processing composition, and that comprises an alkali permeable polymer and precipitating nuclei, and (b) a second stratum that is substantially less permeable to alkaline processing composition than the first stratum and that comprises (i) a polymer hydrolysable to said alkali permeable polymer and (ii) a reagent that is diffusible in alkaline processing composition to the first stratum and which is capable of modifying the properties of a silver transfer image formed in the element. The first stratum may also contain the reagent but in a lesser amount than the second stratum, the second stratum may also contain precipitating nuclei, and/or a layer of alkaline hydrolysable cellulose ester containing silver precipitating nuclei but free of the reagent may be provided between strata (a) and (b). Preferably the reagent is a toning agent and/or a stablizing agent (e.g. one or two of 1-phenyl-5-mercapto-tetrazole, N-methyl-2-mercapto-imidazole, 2-acetamido-5- mercapto-1, 3, 4-thiadiazole and imidazolidine-2- thione and thiazolidine thione).
