Abstract

1419777 Photographic colour diffusion transfer using a silver halide solvent POLAROID CORP 22 Dec 1972 [23 Dec 1971 24 April 1972] 59344/72 Heading G2C A composite print comprising a positive dye image over a negative image and separated therefrom by a light-reflecting layer is formed by developing at least one exposed silver halide layer having associated therewith a dye image-forming material with an aqueous alkaline processing composition in the presence of a silver halide solvent capable of forming a soluble silver halide complex and which contains no S atoms thereby forming an imagewise distribution of a diffusible dye image-forming material and transferring at least a portion of this to an image-receiving layer on a transparent support. The silver halide solvent may be a cyclic imide e.g. a uracil such as uracil or 5-or-6-methyluracil. This silver halide solvent may be used in combination with a second silver halide complexing agent which forms a relatively insoluble silver halide complex and which may be a compound of the Formula:- Where R is optionally substituted alkyl e.g. benzyl, or a compound containing S, e.g. it may contain a mercapto group or a group that provides a mercapto group on processing, e.g. a mercaptotetrazole such as 1-phenyl-5-mercaptotetrazole, or a mercapto substituted tetrahydropyrimidine. At least part of the silver halide solvent is generally in the processing composition. The processing composition may be in a rupturable container and may discharge its contents between the silver halide and imagereceiving layers or between the silver halide layer and its support when present. The processing composition may contain a reflecting agent and an optical filter agent. Normally all the layers of the material used are free of silver precipitating agent. The dye image-forming material may be a dye developer or an intermediate for an image dye. The use of a silver halide solvent containing no S atoms produces dye transfer images which retain their whites and have less tendency to discolour.
