Abstract

1420099 Photographic diffusion transfer process using polyethylene glycol POLAROID CORP 18 Dec 1972 [20 Dec 1971 24 April 1972] 58372/72 Heading G2C A photographic product comprising an exposed silver halide emulsion having associated therewith at least one dye image-providing material is developed by contact with an aqueous alkaline processing composition while superposed with an image-receiving layer whereby a dye image is formed by diffusion transfer in the imagereceiving layer, either (1) the dye image-providing material being a dye developer and the processing composition includes polyethylene glycol and/or (2) the processing composition being initially contained in a rupturable container and being discharged from this container between two layers between which there is a stratum of polyethylene glycol and at least one of which contains watersoluble polymer. The processing composition in the rupturable container may comprise an aqueous alkaline solution of a film-forming, viscosityproviding polymer e.g. hydroxyethyl cellulose or alkali metal carboxymethyl cellulose, having a light-reflecting pigment e.g. TiO 2 dispersed therein, and a water-soluble polyethylene glycol which may have a molecular weight of 6000-7500. The presence of polyethlene glycol gives colour transfer images of more uniform quality over a wider temperature range and colour transfer images having increased colour saturation and less loss of film speed when the process is performed at elevated temperatures. In addition polyethylene glycols act as temporary bonding layers at the position where processing composition is to be discharged during development.
