Producers. - A gas-producer for automobile engines &c. is formed of two or more superimposed internal sections a, b of cast iron enclosed by an outer sheet-metal shell c so as to form an annular space d, through which the air supplied to the grate e is passed, the heating of the air being increased by means of vertical radial ribs j on one or more of the lower sections b, these ribs forming separate conduits for the air supply. The base m is provided with a rectangular opening formed with guides for the reception of a sliding plate o carrying the grate c, which can thus be withdrawn through a fire-door t. Water may be sprayed into the annular space, or may be supplied from a float chamber p to a jet r passing through the grate e.
