Abstract

112,218. Kelly, W. P., and Slattery, D. C. Aprii 13, 1917. Spray carburettors. - The fuel and air supplies are drawn into and through a housing 1 by a rotating structure carried by a power-driven spindle 25 turning in bearings 23, 24 in the housing 1 and the base of the float chamber 8. The structure comprises a barrel 33 carrying circular plates 37, 41, 43, 39, rings 46, 47, and radial vanes 44, 48, a plate 28, which carries a conical chamber 30 with radial vanes 73, dipping into the well 21 of the float-chamber, and fuel-supply tubes 68 passing through the plate 39 and terminating in nozzles 75. Fuel from the well 21 is drawn up through the chamber 30 and tubes 68 to the nozzles 75, and impinges on bent plates 77. The air supply enters ports 4 in the upper part 3 of the housing, end passes through ports in a spider 31 and through secondary and primary air ports 34, 35 in the barrel 33. The ports 34, 35 are controlled by a slidable sleeve 79 actuated by means of a lever 89, the forked end of which engages a grooved disk 86 carrying slidable rods 83 to which the sleeve 79 is secured. The air and the resulting mixture pass between the plates &c. of the rotating structure to the outer part of the housing and to the outlet 2. Unvaporized fuel collects in a gutter 50 carried by the ring 46 and is returned to the float chamber 8 by tubes 53, 54 terminating above a perforated gallery 59 in the float chamber. The tubes 53, 54 are carried by a stationary member 51 secured to the housing 1 and having an extension 57 terminating within a curved flange 70 on the chamber 30, so that the contents of the float chamber are not split if the carburettor is inverted. The float chamber is divided by circular partitions into an annular compartment 9, having vanes 10 sloping in the direction of rotation of the spindle 25, and an annular float compartment 11 connected by conduits 22 with the well 21. The float chamber is heated by exhaust gases or hot water in a jacket 93. Specification 107,693 is referred to.
