Abstract
1340122 Extruding FUCHS GmbH 19 April 1971 [21 Feb 1970] 21521/71 Heading B3P An extrusion die assembly includes a die insert 2 which is positioned within a die holder 5 between a tapered entry sleeve 3 bearing against a billet receiver 8 and a ceramic insert 7 and which is electrically heatable by means provided in an adjacent surface of the ceramic insert 7. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the die insert 2 and a ceramic entry sleeve 3 are heated by wires 6, 6<SP>1</SP>, the temperature being controlled by a thermocouple contacting the insert 2. The billet receiver 8 is heatable and receives preheated billets of high strength metals, e.g. titanium alloys. The die is cooled by passing liquid nitrogen or compressed air and water through a conduit 10. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) a ceramic die insert 22 is positioned between an earthed metal sleeve 23 and a ceramic sleeve 24 and is heated by supplying electrical energy from a terminal 26 connected to a metal disc 27 which is mounted adjacent the die insert 22.
