Abstract
1417225 Internal resistance heating NIKOLAUS SORG GmbH & CO 25 July 1973 [25 July 1972] 35536/73 Heading H5H [Also in Division H2] To prevent the formation of local hot spots between a current supply device 3 and a ceramic electrode 1, a layer 2 of a conductive material which has a melting-point just below the operating temperature of the electrode and is ductile at the operating temperature, is interposed between the device 3 and electrode 1 and is urged into contact with the electrode 1 by device 3. The ductile layer 2 ensures uniform contact resistance across the head of the electrode 1 and the material of the layer is so chosen that it is not squeezed out from the gap between the electrode 1 and device 2. In the glass furnace shown, the device 3 acts as a ram and is secured to a spring-biased ceramic block 5 by a rod 4. The biasing spring 7 acts between the block 5 and the end-plate of a cylinder 6 which is secured to the furnace brickwork supports 10 by an adjusting screw 11. The spring 7 thus biases the electrode 1, which has an annular shoulder, against the furnace lining 9, to take up any movement between the supports 10 and lining 9 during operation. A supply cable 8 is connected to ram 3. The electrode 1 may be made of tin oxide and the layer 2 may be silver solder, e.g. Degussa alloy. The layer 2 may be made of ductile non-metallic materials. The ram 3 and head of the electrode 1 may have complementary conical recesses and projection for centering.
