Abstract

1472057 Electrode furnace for glass ELEMELT Ltd 25 April 1974 [25 April 1973] 19730/73 Heading H5H A glass furnace electrode is protected from oxidation where it passes through the furnace tank wall by a protective sleeve assembly comprising a metal layer 18 and a layer 34 of viscous sealing material. The electrode 20 of molybdenum is covered by a sleeve 18 of nickel or nickel alloy, which may be in turn covered by a further sleeve 22 of alumina-silica based paper, and the layer 34 of viscous sealing material is of alumina-silica based cement. A second layer 35 of the viscous sealing material may be present. Any further space between the electrode and the furnace tank wall is filled with glass 36, 37 which flows in from the tank. At the outer part of the tank wall this glass is kept solidified by cooling means carried by the electrode, Fig. 1, not shown, but when it is required to feed the electrode into the furnace these cooling means can be turned off to allow the glass to flow and allow relative movement between the electrode and the tank. As an alternative to the glass providing the flow capability for moving the electrode sodium silicate may be provided.
