Abstract

[Also in Divisions C1, C7 and H3-H5] Oxygen-deficient titania is used in powder or tablet form as a starter material in an electroslag refining or welding process comprising melting an electrode by passing an electric current through a molten slag in which the end of the electrode is located. The titania is TiO x , where x is 1À65-1À98. It may be used alone or in a composition with alkaline earth metal fluorides, Fe or Ni powder, and/or glass powder, and may be bonded, e.g. with clay, or sintered.
