1338939 Stackable chairs; securing chairs together in rows; detachable armrests SHELBY WILLIAMS INDUSTRIES Inc 18 Oct 1971 48415/71 Headings A4H, A4J and A4Y A chair comprises a seat assembly mounted on a base assembly, said base assembly including two leg units 22, Fig. 2, each of which comprises a pair of legs 24 joined to a cross-member 26 at upper horizontal portions 25 thereof, the cross-members 26 being secured back-to-back, and the seat assembly having L-shaped frame members 16 mounting a seat (20), Fig. 1, (not shown) and a back rest (18). The parts may comprise cast aluminium. Slots 34 in the units 22 co-operate to define mortices when the crossmembers 26 are brought together and receive tenars 36 on the members 16, for example, as a force fit, the parts being secured by bolts 32 threaded into holes 30 and 35 in the cross-members 26 and tenars 36, see Fig. 5. During stacking the plastics laver horizontal surfaces of bosses 28 on the legs 24 rest on the leg portions 25 of the chair below. The chairs can be connected in rows by an I-shaped cross-head 40 received in registering slots 42 in the leg portions 25, see Fig. 5. The cross-head 40 may comprise resilient plastics and the slots 42 may have detents to releasably secure the cross-head 40. Alternatively, the slots 42 may be tapered and have a restricted entrance, See Figs, 6, 7, (not shown) and one end of the "I" is correspondingly tapered and is inserted in a slot 42 before the two units 22 are secured together. The other untapered end of the "I" releasably engages a slot 42. A vertical support member 50, Fig. 9, having flanges 52 for mounting an arm rest or table may be secured to at least one side of the chair. The support 50 has a head with a tapered end 54 which is fixed in a slot 42, and a slot 56, see Fig. 10, (not shown), for releasably receiving a non-tapered end of a cross-head 40. During stacking, the table can be pivoted to a substantially vertical position see Fig. 11, (not shown).
