Abstract

1333933 Vitreous enamels TRW Inc 23 Dec 1970 [5 Feb 1970] 61247/70 Heading C1M [Also in Division H1] A vitreous enamel resistance composition consists of a glass frit and finely divided particles of any alloy of copper and nickel, the alloy forming from 25 to 75% by weight of the composition, the composition also containing 0 to 20% by weight of a metal having a positive temperature coefficient of resistance such as tungsten, molybdenum, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, niobium, titanium, chromium or tantalum. An electrical resistor may be produced by applying the composition to a glass or ceramic body and firing at a temperature below the melting temperature of the alloy, e.g. between 750‹ and 900‹ C. in a reducing or inert atmosphere, e.g. nitrogen. The composition is produced by dry milling the alloy particles in pebble mill with a portion of the glass frit to reduce the alloy particle size to 5 microns, after which the resulting mixture is mixed with additional frit by ball milling in water or an organic medium such as butyl carbitol acetate.
