Abstract

1330388 Cracking at specified temperatures; altering physical properties; making strip material ST JOE MINERALS CORP 29 Sept 1971 [5 Oct 1970] 45286/71 Headings B3A and B3V [Also in Division C7] Superplastic lead alloys are prepared by casting an age hardenable lead alloy, fully age hardening the casting and then extruding it at an exit surface temperature in the range 120- 250‹ F. The surface temperature may be brought within this range by spraying the extrusion with water as it leaves the die. Leadcalcium alloys may be used, containing 0À03- 0À5 weight per cent calcium, or lead-calcium-tin alloys containing the above content of calcium and up to 1À0 weight per cent tin. Alternatively, the lead may be alloyed with one or more of antimony, tellurium, barium, strontium, sodium and lithium. Binary alloys may be fully age hardened in one day at 20‹ F., ternary alloys requiring 60-90 days, which may be reduced to 5 hours at 400‹ F. Extrusion ratios may be 38 : 1 and 133 : 1 and cam speeds 1-12 inches per minute.
