Abstract
132,894. Marks, E. C. R., (American Machine & Foundry Co.). Oct. 1, 1918. Cigarette-making machines.-Relates to automatic feed-mechanism, and consists in combining an endless-band auxiliary feeding-apparatus on which the tobacco is levelled by hand, with automatic mechanism in a hopper, so as to maintain a constant quantity of tobacco in the hopper. The auxiliary endless band 97 is caused to travel at a comparatively slow rate to allow more time for the even spreading of a deep layer of tobacco, which passes under a roller 110 and curved pivoted plate 112, and is evenly distributed into the hopper by a rotary picker roll 116. The tobacco is fed forward by a cylinder 30, constructed of carding-cloth 29 on wood segments 31, picker pins 59 on a rotary cylinder 58, an endless band 66, a roller 74, and a picker roll 82, which delivers it to a hopper 78 above a forwarding- belt of the cigarette-making machine. One side of the main hopper is formed of a curved slotted plate 40, through which project the upwardly-moving teeth 42 on an intermittingly rotating raking drum, and sloping teeth of tumbling wheels 56 which push the tobacco away from the plate. Any short tobacco which passes through the plate 40, or past the cylinder 30, falls on to the endless band 66 and is evenly mixed with the long tobacco. The lower portions of the belts 97, 66 are struck at intervals by spring hammers 119, 93, controlled by cams 120, 89, to shake off adhering fragments of tobacco. The casing is fitted with hinged doors 24, 26, 28, and a transparent front 20. Specification 106,140 is referred to.
